Charlie's two-month update

Charlie turned two-months old on the twelfth but thanks to a combination of procrastination and forgetfulness I wasn't able to take him in for his well-baby appointment until last week.  I knew he had been growing but even I was rather surprised by his stats: 14 pounds, 7 ounces and 24" long (I think I can now say with some certainty that breastfeeding is going well).  Now I know why he's barely squeezing into his 3-6 month clothing!

Charlie is such a happy and easy-going baby; he always greets me with a big gummy smile and coos of happiness.  He's recently started laughing out loud and seems to enjoy being tickled and surprised.  One of Charlie's favorite things in the whole wide world is watching the ceiling fan followed closely by some good ol' fashioned nekkid time whenever he gets his diaper changed.  Charlie has also recently discovered how to splash in the bath and has started to grasp for toys and such just within his reach.  In other news, Charlie has been sleeping through the night since he was about five and a half weeks old and has recently given up night feedings entirely, which is awesome albeit kind of uncomfortable for me as I usually wake up feeling like a soggy Dolly Parton impersonator.

Grandpa to the rescue

Due to a tragic accident involving one of Captain Husband's soldiers two weeks ago, CH had to attend a funeral out of town for four days last week, which meant I was going to be on my own with the two boys.  I've got the day-to-day routine of juggling the two of them at once down pretty well, but I admit that I am far from confident in my abilities to handle both boys on my own once the evening rolls around--that's when CH and I deploy the divide and conquer tactic; he tackles the toddler while I handle the baby.  Thankfully CH's dad had some vacation time burning a hole in his pocket, so he offered to fly down and help out around the house while CH was gone--plus it gave him the perfect excuse to come and meet his new grandson.

Sammy immediately warmed right up to his Pop-Pop and was very happy to have someone to play with while I was dealing with Charlie; and Charlie definitely seemed to enjoy all of the attention that his grandfather lavished upon him, especially whenever Grandpa would sing or speak to him in Italian.

The four days were up before I knew it and soon it was time for my father-in-law to return to New Jersey; CH returned home Saturday afternoon and his dad was leaving Sunday morning, so they didn't have a lot of overlap time to spend together, but I was at least able to grab a few photos of the three generations before my father-in-law had to leave for the airport.  With any luck, we'll be able to visit with CH's grandparents over Thanksgiving and then I'll be able to take a photo that captures four generations all at once.

Puddle jumping

These photos were taken a few weeks ago (shows just how far behind the eight ball I am these days) before my mom returned to Pennsylvania, but they're just too cute not to share.  We'd been hit by a big rainstorm one afternoon, so my mom took Sammy and Charlie outside to do some puddle jumping, something that Sammy doesn't get to do too often on account of us living in the middle of the desert and all that.  Sammy had a blast as you can see and I had a great time photographing him having fun.

Fourteen-month update

In the course of the insanity surrounding the move and getting settled into the new house, Sammy's fourteen-month birthday complete passed me by, so I'm about two weeks behind on this one.  Here are his current stats from what I can gather: he weighs in at around twenty-five pounds or so and has shot up at least another inch in the last month.  All of a sudden things that used to be safely out of his reach are now totally within his grasp--time to baby-proof again!  Sammy also gained three new molars, which all came in during our time on the road (yay), bringing his total tooth count to eleven.  He's getting pretty good at brushing his teeth--he opens his mouth and says "aaaah" whenever he sees a toothbrush.

I know it's been said time and time again, but I still can't get over just how much of a sponge kids are at this age.  Sammy is a frighteningly accurate mimic of sounds and actions; Captain Husband and I are really going to have to start watching not only what we say, but how we say it.  Sammy now stretches and yawns just like CH does, grabs at his belly when he's asked where it is, and has picked up a few other things, like barking back at the dogs in our neighborhood.  He's also added a few new words and sounds to his repertoire, like juice, banana, ball, moo and ow.  Sammy often uses the latter in a lame attempt to distract us from disciplining him.

I'll never forget something that my mom once told me about kids: "Imagine your worst personality trait and that of your partner.  Those are the traits your children will have in spades."  For me and CH, I'd have to say that our worst personality trait is stubbornness, and boy, oh boy, is our kid pig-headed.  Once he gets an idea into his head, Sammy is relentless in its pursuit.  Tell him "no," and he'll just shake his head at you, grin, and keep on doing whatever you just told him not to.  If you actually attempt to intervene, you'll get an all-out tantrum, which often includes the following: crying, throwing toys, and/or throwing himself on the floor and rolling around in frustration.  Fortunately these end pretty quickly, but I wasn't expecting to have to deal with these sort of outbursts for at least a few more months.

Random tantrums aside, Sammy's actually a pretty easy-going kid; he loves to be read to and will often bring over a book or two for us to read.  He loves playing with anything that resembles a car and makes "vrrrrroooom" noises whenever he sees one in real life.  Sammy continues in his obsession over anything and everything cat-related, including Sandy, much to her chagrin.  He's also started playing games with us, like chase, "throwing" a ball back and forth, and hide-and-seek; he loves to hide behind the curtains in our living room--it really is a lot of fun hanging out with him all day.

Getting to know some chicks

Sammy and I drove to western Pennsylvania this weekend for one last visit with my family before we make the big move to Texas.  My parents' neighbors recently added a few more chickens to their brood, so my brother and I took Sammy over to meet the little ladies:

Sammy was surprisingly gentle with the chicks (I guess all of my constant badgering about him being nice to the cat is beginning to pay off) and had a great time watching them scratch and flutter about the yard.  Maybe one day, we'll be able to have some backyard chickens of our own.  A girl can dream, right?

And speaking of the ladies, my brother was a big hit with the chicks.  (I'll be here all night, folks!)

Show and Tell: Looking up (literally)

Show:

Tell:
This is one of the outtakes from a little Valentine's Day-themed photo session that Sammy and I did over the weekend.  Sammy really enjoyed hamming it up in front of the camera in his new specs and I got a lot of great pictures of him...too many, in fact.  I had a bit of a problem picking the one that I liked the most to use in the Valentine's Day card that I'm making for the Paper Mama's Valentine challenge.  I finally managed to narrow it down thanks to some input from my mom so be sure to stop by tomorrow when I'll be unveiling Sammy's funny Valentine (I am having entirely too much fun with this themed stuff).

Show and tell: Outside

It's sad when your husband in South Korea knows more about the weather going on in your area than you do.  Sammy and I were skyping with Captain Husband this morning when I casually remarked that it was snowing outside.  "Oh, yeah," he said, "aren't you supposed to get about 3" today?"  "What?!?"  I checked the weather report online and saw that, yes, CH was in fact correct.  This was going to make running errands fun--people in northern Virginia are notoriously horrible when it comes to driving in snow.  I bundled Sammy up and we headed off for my Dunkin' Donuts fix, followed by a quick trip to the grocery store so I could pick up some essentials (i.e. brownie mix and beer--don't judge me).  Realizing that this was Sammy's first official snow fall, I tried to snap a few photos of him in the snow; Sammy was not all that impressed.

A view of fall from above

This week's theme at Paper Heart Camera is a view from above, while the theme over at the Trendy Treehouse is fall.  Done and done.  (Don't worry about Sammy's bare feet-it was unseasonably warm when I snapped this photo.)

Show and tell: From where I'm sitting

The latest challenge over at Paper Heart Camera is to show off a photo taken from where you're sitting.  In this case, I was sitting on the floor of the living room, playing with Sammy (have I mentioned how excited I am about him sitting up?!?).  If you look closely you can see Sandy's stealth photobomb in effect.

Show and tell (I'm taking a sick day)

Paper Heart Camera is hosting a photography show and tell this week inspired by the little details all around us; I took this close-up portrait of Sandy the other day and I think it will work (click here to view the other entries).  What can I say--I'm sick and not thinking clearly.  Hopefully I'll be back to normal after a day of rest and able to resume my normal blogging schedule.  Coming up: Sammy's first trip to Mount Vernon and a very craftastic get-together.  The anticipation is killing you, right?
