The latest in feline fun

Chances are if you've ever owned a cat that you are intimately familiar with their love of climbing anything and everything.  Sandy is definitely no exception--she's responsible for taking several years off of my life as a result of her fondness for leaping atop my china cabinet and tip-toeing around the antique glass collection that resides there.  Captain Husband suggested that we buy one of those kitty condo things, but I had several objections: 1. They're incredibly expensive...like, I could get a new camera lens kind of expensive; 2.  They're pretty ugly; and 3. Sammy would probably show more interest in it than the cat and would likely wind up hurting himself in some way.  With those reasons in mind, I decided to try something a little different.  I present to you our wall-mounted kitty condo extraordinaire:

Okay, okay, I know they're just shelves, but I have plans to spiff them up a bit; I'm going to add some nice soft fabric to the uppermost shelf so that Sandy will have a comfy vantage point from which to spy on the neighborhood birds.  I'm also toying around with attaching some toys to the bottom of the top shelf so that she can bat at them from the lowest shelf.  At the very least, the shelves offer her a bit of respite from Sammy, aka Mr. Grabby Hands, and she gets to enjoy watching him play with his toys.  All in all I spent about $25 on this little project for Miss Sandy Cat, which is a drop in the bucket compared to what we would have spent on one of those carpet-clad two-story scratching posts. What's the craziest thing you've ever done for a pet?

That is a truly awesome idea! I'm now eyeing various walls in my house to see if I could do that, too. Yeah, and those cat condo things?? Why DO they cost so much?

I had a friend build an above ground pool for her dog. They used to live near the beach and when they moved away and she couldn't swim daily, necessary for her arthritis, they decided to build a pool for her.

Me, I think I bought a coat for my dog once. She was a pit bull. Think she wore it?

This makes me laugh! We have had our cats on top of our kitchen cabinets before (the ones near the ceiling)& even had one launch & land on the top of a door- then wasn't brave enough to get back down. This is why they have their own room they go to at night when we can't watch them- otherwise things on our plant shelves would be knocked down while we sleep :)

That's a pretty good idea. We don't have anything like that for kitty paw, but she makes due.

Great idea and not ugly at all!

What a neat idea. You are just so creative. I love how you compare the prices of things in relationship to new lenses. We get along so well. ;)

My kitty cats would LOVE those shelves! We have this mattress we are storing in our upstairs bathroom (don't ask) and the cats climb up it and perch on the top. Pretty funny.

Love the idea, L!

Yep, Serafina does the same. Mr. F has also mentioned one of those cat towers by I've objected with the same points you outlined. Maybe we'll just put some shelves up high somewhere specifically for her!
