Foto Friday: Edit this

This week's suggested theme over at the Household 6 Diva is "Edit this" so that we can all flex our photoshop skills.  Confession time: I actually don't like editing my photos aside from correcting the exposure every now and then.  Whenever I do attempt to get creative with my editing, I always feel as though the results come out hackneyed and rather lackluster.  But I thought I'd go ahead and give it a try on this photo that I took two weeks ago when northern Virginia was hit with about 6" of snow in just a few hours (it was a huge mess that pretty much disabled most of the roadways but it sure was pretty to look at):

Overall, I like how the SOOC photo turned out, but I wanted to amplify the contrast and really play up the light flares that I managed to capture. Here's what I did using Picnik:
  1. Under the "Edit" tab, select exposure and heighten the overall contrast.
  2. Under the "Create" tab, select "Effects."
  3. Apply "Boost" at a strength of 50%.
  4. Apply "Black and White" and manually adjust the color filter for maximum light flare.

This is what I ended up with; what do you think?  Do you have a preference for one over the other?

I actually like the SOOC better! Great shot- I love the color of the house in the background. It looks so very quiet!

Great shot! You look like you guys got a lot of snow.

The flare is fun, but I think it takes away from the snow. The SOCC with the snow and the subtle color of the houses on the street - I like that one better, I think. :) Always fun to play & experiment with editing. Sometimes you don't know what an effect will do until you try it. Enjoy the warm weekend (we will be warming up in NC as well, I am SO looking forward to getting outside!)

Great shot! I love both, but I think I like the edited one better. I love how you played up the flares!!

I like the edited one better. Very blizzard-y, I love what the black and white does to emphasize the snow. And I like the flare too.

your edit makes the photo look so much colder.

I really like the black and white one - it adds so much more moodiness to the photo!

I really need to learn to edit my photos. I love the edited one you took. Great photo.

I agree with Kitten. When I saw the edited version, it felt colder, like you were really transmitting the snowy night. And I love black and whites of snow in general!

I am agreeing with some of the others. The black and white edit definitely plays up the cold factor. :)

both are fantastic--but I really like what you did in the edit. Kaye—the road goes ever ever on
